2016 Outlook on Construction Jobs

The building and construction industry has traditionally been one of the largest employing industries in Australia. We take a further look into industry predictions for this year and what this means for Gold Coast Trades College students.

New South East QLD developments are predicted to create more than 2000 construction jobs!

Brisbane City Council and Queensland Government have recently approved several new construction projects in the Brisbane CBD. These developments are set to create more than 2000 new construction jobs for the region. The proposed projects include further developments on the Queens Wharf as well as a new apartment sky rise.

The prospects come at the perfect time for Gold Coast Trades College students, creating job opportunities for construction workers by 2022. At Gold Coast Trades College, students will complete their higher learning journey equipped with practical skills, formal education, and a nationally recognised qualification. The industry is predicted to thrive in the next coming years, opening the doors for newly qualified entrants to prosper and attain immediate positions.

The projected developments

The Brisbane City Council has committed to restoring the Howard Smith Wharves site on the iconic Brisbane River in an effort to transform the current site into public parkland. The project is set to create an entertainment and leisure precinct, featuring commercial areas including cafes, an exhibition area, and a hotel. Giving new life to a previous cargo wharf, this historic site will soon appeal to locals and tourists alike.

Queensland Government announced late last year the approval for The Queens’s Wharf project with an estimated cost of $3 billion. The Government has predicted an estimate of 2000 construction jobs will be created by this project alone by the year 2022.

PDS Australia proposed the 250-metre sky rise project. The building will boast inner city accommodation, retail space, and luxury apartments. The executive chairman of PDS Australia has stated, “As the Brisbane urban landscape changes and the population increases, Queen’s Tower will respond to that future need for quality inner-city living.”

The projected period of change and growth means good news for the construction industry and the Gold Coast Trades College students about to enter this workforce. Brisbane and Queensland as a whole will prosper from the construction industry and these upcoming developments. The projects provide construction workers the opportunity to work on innovative, community-building and entertainment precincts that add value to the Brisbane public.

The future for workers in the construction industry is thriving. This is a great time to get qualified and help secure your position in the growing and changing Brisbane construction environment.
