So not everyone got to be an apprentice when they first jumped into the building industry right?? Some folks got their start through family businesses or just by working hard on site. Maybe you began as a labourer for a tradie or builder, or you started an apprenticeship but didn’t finish.
The thing is, we know there’s a tonne of you nodding ya heads right now…so we’ve created this quick video and write up to make RPL a tad clearer for those of you just want the fast facts.
Obvious Things:
- To get your trade contractor license, you need the right trade qualification.
- A good Registered Training Organisation (RTO) can help you figure out if you qualify for Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL).
Bonus Things:
- Some of us on the CSQ Panel have funding to make this process affordable and efficient….This is us here at Gold coast Trades College. So double Bonus!
Here are some quick common questions: We’ve answered short & sweet with facts only.
Q: How much experience do I need to qualify for RPL and/or funding?**
A: Generally, you should have at least 3 years of experience in a specific trade. It’s more about proving your skills than the number of years. A quality training company will help you gather the right evidence of your experience.
Q: I started an apprenticeship years ago. Can that count towards RPL?**
A: Yes! Some of your past apprenticeship units might be eligible for credit transfers, depending on how old they are. They can also be part of your evidence of experience.
Q: What evidence do I need to provide?**
A: The evidence must be specific to the units of competency in each trade. A good training company will guide you through the process of collecting compliant evidence of your experience.
Q: What should I avoid when selecting an RTO?**
A: Be wary if a training company says you only need a few photos and videos of you doing tasks. This might indicate lower standards and questionable qualification validity.
Q: What is CSQ Funding?**
A: If you work in the Queensland Construction industry, CSQ Funding lets you prove 70% of the competencies, and get trained in the rest. It’s a great way to upskill across the skills you’ve learnt and gain formal training in areas you lack experience. It’s a win win.
QUICK FACT: A quality RTO will guide you to the most efficient pathway, ensuring your skills are assessed and any gaps are formally trained. You’ll then have the qualifications needed for your license and the confidence to handle all aspects of your trade.
TIP: When choosing an RTO, consider the Gold Coast Trades College. We set the standard in construction training and have been doing this for over 20 years now. We are trusted to be on the CSQ panel, offering cost-effective options. Our fees are reasonable, around $480 under the funded model, but most importantly you have real people supporting you to get this done, probably Nick, the fella in the video or Shona, and you can ask for either of them when you call.
REMEMBER: You’re aiming to genuinely upskill, not just pay for a piece of paper. Avoid being overcharged and make sure you’re working with a reputable organisation that doesn’t cut corners.
