Skills Assessment and Gap Training (RPL)

Your Experience. Verified and Recognised.

At Gold Coast Trades College, we recognise that many skilled tradespeople have developed extensive knowledge and practical ability through years of on-the-job experience. Our Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) and Skills Assessment process allows experienced workers to have those skills formally recognised through a nationally recognised Certificate III trade qualification.

Our RPL programs are designed for two main groups:

  • Experienced tradespeople who have developed strong industry skills but have never completed a formal qualification.
  • Qualified tradespeople needing to update their qualification to meet current industry or licensing requirements, including those required for QBCC licensing.

At GCTC, we take great pride in ensuring that RPL qualifications maintain the same integrity and quality as our full training programs. Every candidate undertakes a comprehensive assessment process that may include portfolio evidence, practical demonstrations, technical questioning and workplace verification.

We do not offer “tick and flick” qualifications. Instead, we work with you to identify your existing skills and provide targeted gap training where required to ensure you meet the full competency requirements of the qualification.

For eligible candidates seeking their first formal trade qualification, Construction Skills Queensland (CSQ) funding may be available to assist with the cost of the assessment and any required gap training.

RPL - Frequently Asked Questions

RPL is an assessment process that recognises the skills and experience you’ve already gained in the industry. Instead of studying content you already know, you can fast-track your way to a nationally recognised qualification.

RPL is ideal for anyone who has worked in a trade or construction-related role and wants to formalise their skills, improve job opportunities or meet licensing requirements.

You provide evidence of your skills and experience, and our assessors review it against industry standards.
If you meet the requirements, you can achieve all or part of a qualification without additional study.

Evidence may include:

  • Photos or videos of completed work
  • Job records or site documentation
  • References from supervisors or employers
  • Logbooks, portfolios or past training certificates

If you’ve been on the tools, you likely have most of what you need already.

Timeframes vary depending on your experience and how quickly you can provide your evidence, but most candidates complete the process much faster than traditional study pathways.

RPL can help you:

  • Gain your qualification faster
  • Avoid repeating skills you already have
  • Improve employment and licensing opportunities
  • Access higher-level study or university pathways

Yes. CSQ funding is available for eligible applicants completing RPL or upskilling in selected trade qualifications.
