Skills and Knowledge You Will Gain

This qualification provides the specialist skills needed to work safely and effectively in the automotive air conditioning and HVAC industry. On completion, you’ll be eligible to obtain a Refrigerant Handling Licence (RHL), setting you apart from other candidates seeking apprenticeships — or even giving you the foundation to start your own air conditioning business.  Learners will learn & gain the following skills:

Course Overview

The following entry requirements apply to ensure applicants are able to fully engage in the course and have the required learning capacity to meeting the course requirements.

Learners must:

  • have already completed a AUR20720 Certificate II in Automotive Vocational Preparation. Credit transfers will apply
  • be currently enrolled in a QLD high school in year 10,11 or 12
  • meet the LLND requirements for the course
  • have a level of physical fitness to be able to handle construction tools, equipment and materials, work outside for long periods of time and climb ladders and scaffolding
  • be able to commit to the course duration and time commitment (including self paced study and homework)

Application for enrolment is subject to a review process that includes assessment against course-specific LLND requirements and a review of student academic reports, behavioural history and absentee levels. Students, their parents, and/or their School or Educational Institution may be contacted for clarification, or to request further information during the review process. Enrolments will not proceed without the support of the School or Educational Institution.

Students are required to complete a total of 6 core units and 7 elective units.

7 elective units

Students are required to complete a total of 7 elective units.

These elective units will be tailored to each student based on the previous elective units completed in their AUR20720 Certificate II in Automotive Vocational Preparation. CREDIT TRANSFERS WILL APPLY

Career Outcomes

This qualification is designed to prepare students for work in automotive service and repair businesses, with a focus on climate control systems. Career opportunities may include:

  • Automotive air conditioning technician
  • Vehicle service assistant specialising in cooling/air systems
  • Trade assistant in automotive electrical and mechanical workshops

Graduates who obtain this qualification are eligible to apply for the Automotive Refrigerant Handling Licence (AAC02) issued by the Australian Refrigeration Council, enabling them to legally handle and service refrigerants in vehicles.

Study Pathways

After completing this course, students may:

  • Progress into an Automotive Apprenticeship such as:
    • Certificate III in Light Vehicle Mechanical Technology
    • Certificate III in Automotive Electrical Technology
    • Certificate III in Mobile Plant Technology
  • Specialise further in automotive electrical, mechanical, or HVAC fields through additional units or qualifications.

This course also strengthens employment pathways into the broader automotive industry, especially for those seeking to combine mechanical, electrical, and climate-control expertise.
