The CPCWHS1001 Prepare to work safely in the construction industry unit is commonly known as the White Card course.

Who needs to complete it?

Anyone who wants to work on, or even access, a construction site in Australia must complete this training. This includes:

  • Construction workers – apprentices, tradespeople, labourers, and anyone performing building or demolition tasks.
  • Site visitors and supervisors – site managers, foremen, engineers, and supervisors who enter operational construction sites.
  • Non-trades personnel – surveyors, architects, project managers, delivery drivers, or cleaners who need to enter a live site as part of their job.
  • Students undertaking training – school-based or adult students completing work experience, structured workplace learning, or pre-apprenticeship programs in construction.

Why is it required?

The unit provides essential knowledge about:

  • Work health and safety (WHS) laws.
  • Identifying hazards and risks on construction sites.
  • Understanding safety signage, PPE requirements, and safe work practices.
  • Knowing how to respond to incidents and emergencies.

Completion leads to the issue of a White Card, which is a mandatory legal requirement under Australian WHS legislation before a person can start work on any construction site.

Once you’ve successfully completed this unit, you will be issued with your General Construction Induction Training Card (previously called a White Card). You must keep this with you whenever you are on site.

Gold Coast Trades College delivers this course Face-to-Face at both its Currumbin and West Ipswich Campuses. Courses are delivered from 8am – 2pm.
